PRINCE2® FAQs
What is PRINCE2?
PRINCE2, which stands for "Projects IN Controlled Environments," is a widely recognised project management framework and methodology. It was developed by the UK government in the late 1980s and has since become a global standard for managing projects effectively. PRINCE2 provides a structured and adaptable approach to managing projects of various sizes and complexities.
How does PRINCE2 relate to project management?
PRINCE2 serves as a comprehensive framework for project management. It outlines a set of principles, themes, and processes that guide project managers through the entire project lifecycle. These components work together to ensure that projects are well-structured, controlled, and can adapt to changing circumstances.
What are the principles of PRINCE2?
PRINCE2 is based on seven key principles that underpin its approach to project management. These principles include:
- Continued business justification: projects should have a valid and compelling reason for existence and this justification should be reviewed throughout the project.
- Learn from experience: PRINCE2 encourages organisations to learn from past projects and apply these lessons to current and future endeavours.
- Defined roles and responsibilities: clear roles and responsibilities are assigned to individuals within the project team, ensuring accountability and effective decision making.
- Manage by stages: projects are divided into manageable stages, allowing for better control and flexibility in adapting to changes.
- Manage by exception: project managers are authorised to act on behalf of project stakeholders, but they should only escalate issues to higher management when they exceed predefined tolerances.
- Focus on products: PRINCE2 emphasises defining and delivering products that meet the project's objectives.
- Tailor to suit the project: the framework can be tailored to fit the specific needs and characteristics of each project.
Methodology and Processes:
PRINCE2 provides a structured approach to project management through its defined processes. These processes include starting, initiating, directing, controlling, managing product delivery, managing stage boundaries, and closing the project. Each process has a specific purpose and set of activities to ensure that the project progresses smoothly from initiation to completion.
How Does PRINCE2 Work?
PRINCE2 offers a flexible and adaptable approach to project management. The duration of a PRINCE2 project can vary widely depending on the project's complexity, size, and scope. Projects can be small and completed within weeks or months, or they can span several years for larger initiatives.
What are PRINCE2 Certifications?
PRINCE2 has multiple certification levels, including:
- PRINCE2 Foundation: An entry-level certification that will establish a basic understanding of PRINCE2 principles and terminology. It typically takes a few days of training to prepare for and pass the exam.
- PRINCE2 Practitioner: This intermediate certification is aimed at those who want to apply PRINCE2 principles to real-world projects. It requires a deeper understanding of PRINCE2 and passing the exam may take a few days of training as well.
- PRINCE2 Agile: This certification combines PRINCE2 with Agile methodologies, making it suitable for projects that require both structure and adaptability.
Why Gain a PRINCE2 Certification?
There are several compelling reasons to pursue a PRINCE2 certification:
- Enhanced career opportunities: PRINCE2 is highly regarded by organisations worldwide, and having a certification can open doors to better job opportunities and career advancement.
- Improved project management skills: PRINCE2 equips professionals with valuable project management skills that can be applied to a wide range of industries and sectors.
- Global recognition: PRINCE2 is recognised and adopted in many countries, making it a valuable certification for professionals looking to work internationally.
- Increased confidence: Certification demonstrates your expertise in project management, giving you and your employers confidence in your abilities.
What is a PRINCE2 qualification equivalent to?
PRINCE2 qualifications are widely recognised and respected in the project management field. They are considered equivalent to other well-known project management certifications like the Project Management Professional (PMP) certification from the Project Management Institute (PMI) and the Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) certification for agile project management. PRINCE2 qualifications demonstrate your ability to manage projects effectively and can be a valuable addition to your professional portfolio, irrespective of your industry or sector.
